Antique Bamboo-style Four-Glass Mantel clock

£4300
image_pdfimage_print

A highly decorative, yet minimal Oriental styled French mantel clock, dating to c.1880.

The bamboo case was devised for clocks in the latter half of the 19th Century because of the increasing demand for Oriental objects and art. Certainly it is not uncommon to see carriage clocks in a bamboo styled case, but is rare to find a full-size mantel clock in this style. The style was more complex to build, and this clock has been constructed not only in fine detail, but also of superor quality.

All case parts are gilded, including the hexagonal pendulum and dial surrounds. Both front and back doors are hinged, and all sides and top are fitted with beveled glass.

The French movement strikes the hours and the passing of the half hour on a bell.

The white enamel 3½ inch-dial continues the theme with bamboo cartouche Roman numerals, and a hexagonal centre image of sprouting crossed canes.

The pendulum bob centres are silvered.

The clock has yet to go through our workshops. Some regilding of case parts will be done, and the movement given a full overhaul, to be sold with our usual full 3-year guarantee.
