Black lacquer Chinoiserie Pagoda Mantel Clock
A lovely japanned mantelpiece clock dating from c.1860. The case has a wealth of gold and red painted details on a black lacquered ground, the main scene on the base showing a relaxing river setting, with men rafting on the river and reposing by on the banks by some Chinese buildings. No surface is left free of decoration; gilt shells and rococo swirls adorn the mouldings. The pagoda top is, quite literally, the crowning glory of this clock setting it apart stylistically from many other Chinoiserie clocks.
The eight day movement has outside count wheel striking mechanism, striking the hours and the passing of the half hour on a bell. The backplate is signed for Vincent & Ice, bearing their 1855 award emblem. As all production by Vincent ceased in 1870, we can date this clock to within that 15 year period between 1855-1870.
The clock has a long steel rod pendulum with two mercury vials, which is seen swinging through the glass aperture in the base of the case.
The cream enamel dial ring has Arabic numerals, and a decorative gilt brass hinged bezel fitted with beveled glass. The escapement is visible in the recessed centre of the dial, showing the jewelled pallets.
Fine matching black steel trefoil hands.
