Domestic Regulator Longcase Clock – Tight, Reading

£SOLD
image_pdfimage_print

A fine Regency domestic regulator longcase clock, in a well-figured flame mahogany veneered case typical of the Regency period.

The case has an architectural pediment and ebonised accents of geometric design.  The recessed trunk door is flanked by brass capitals over fluted pilasters. Although by a provincial maker, this clock by Tight of Reading exhibits all the qualities of the top London makers of the period. Indeed we know that Barwise shared the same case-maker.

The domestic regulator five pillar eight-day movement has a deadbeat escapement and Harrison maintaining power. It is regulated by a compensated gridiron pendulum with large brass bob and graduated rating nut. The movement is supported on an arched iron strut to carry the additional weight of the very heavy gridiron pendulum.

The 12″ silvered well-engraved dial has Roman numerals and large subsidiary seconds and calendar dials, a strike/silent lever above the twelve. It is signed for the maker, Tight, Reading. The decorative original matching hands are particularly attractive.

Original brass cased weights.
