Engraved dial Carriage clock with Hour and Five minute Repeat

This is one of two Five-minute repeating carriage clocks that we currently have. Much rarer than regular repeaters, this clock was originally retailed by Hunt & Roskell, one of the top retailers of fine clocks in London. They had many high quality clocks signed for them, including many strut clocks by Thomas  Cole and carriage clocks made by the finest French makers including Henri Jacot.
The 8-day movement is signed on the backplate for Hunt & Roskell, New Bond Street, London, and numbered 4586. It retains its original silvered platform escapement.

It exhibits the usual strike sequence of hours and the passing of the half hour. Both repeat buttons are mounted on the top of the case. Depressing the front top button will repeat the last hour struck. Depressing the rear button will activate the same hammer to indicate the number of five-minute intervals that have elapsed since the last hour.

The movement is shown here prior to servicing, but it will be overhauled and guaranteed for 3 years.

The Anglaise Riche styled case has fluted columns and ripple galleries, and has been recently regilded, to now be presented in first-class order. The signed white enamel dial is set into a beautifully engraved gilt mask with a matt ground and ringed dial border. The dial and all glasses are in perfect condition.

Hunt & Roskell had retail premises at 156 New Bond Street and a manufactory at 26 Harrison Street, near Clerkenwell. The firm was founded by Paul Storr in 1819, trading as Storr & Co. (1819-22), Storr & Mortimer (1822-38), Mortimer & Hunt (1838-43) and then Hunt & Roskell (1843-97). John Samuel Hunt, who had assisted Storr from the start, continued as a partner until his death in 1865, when he was succeeded by his son, John Hunt (d.1879). Robert Roskell, formerly a watchmaker and merchant of Liverpool, joined in 1844 and remained in the firm until his death in 1888. In 1889 the firm was taken over by J.W.
