Hook and Spike Lantern Wall clock – Ralph Gout, London
A fine example of an arched dial hook-and-spike lantern clock by a good London maker, dating from c.1800. This is a very decorative piece, having a well-proportioned dial with finely cast spandrels.
The iron posted frame movement has a verge and crown wheel escapement with count wheel, striking the hours on the clear sonorous bell. It is driven by a single weight. The short pendulum has a brass bob.
The movement is fully encased with latched brass doors on each side, and hangs by a hooped iron loop. The clock is mounted with a posted bell with engraved leaf scroll frets.
The arched dial has a silvered boss in the arch signed for the maker, with crescent moon spandrels over a silvered chapter ring engraved with Roman numerals and a matted brass centre.
Original matching pair of steel hands.
- Height of movement: 35cms
- Width and depth: c. 20cms
