A modern miniature mantel clock with a tourbillon escapement by Kieninger, Germany.

The 8-day timepiece movement sits on a Makassar ebony base, under a special mouth-blown, oval glass dome.

The brass gears are mounted between two A-frame silvered movement plates, both plates decorated with concentric feather patterning.  The tourbillon escapement adds continual movement, visible through the engraved gilt skeletonised dial. See the video here.

Black Breguet-style hands.

The base has a slot to the front for storage of the intricate winding key.

Dimensions: 18 x 13.5 x 11 cm

A tourbillon aims to counter the effects of gravity by mounting the escapement and balance wheel in a rotating cage, to negate the effect of gravity when the timepiece (thus the escapement) is stuck in a certain position. By continuously rotating the entire balance wheel/escapement assembly at a slow rate (typically about one revolution per minute), positional errors are averaged out. It was developed around 1795 and patented by the French-Swiss watchmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet on June 26, 1801.
