Solid Silver cased Desk Timepiece, 1921

A larger than average silver desk clock, the solid silver shell to the ebonised wood case hallmarked for 1921.

The silvered oval dial has Art Deco styled Arabic numerals, and marked in the centre with an 8 in a triangle. This references the eight-day movement. It has elegant matching blued steel hands.

The overhauled movement is wound from the rear, the affixed key folds flat to the movement. A slot gives access to the regulation lever, marked S for slower and F for faster. The movement is protected form dust by the circular case back.

The Birmingham hallmark for 1921 is accompanied by a stamp for CSG & Co. in a shield. This is the maker’s mark of Charles S. Green, a business established in 1905. Charles was assisted in the business by his wife Winifred, a talented artist who designed all the firm’s early patterns. The firm moved in 1907 to Cogent Works, 54 St.Paul’s Square and in 1982 to a new factory at Lionel Street, Birmingham.
