Swiss Gilt Verge Cartel Clock and Barometer

£SOLD

A highly decorative clock and barometer pair dating from the 1880s, housed in small gilded wood cases.

The 8-day timepiece clock has a convex white enamel dial, signed Robert Adler à Berne, with matching delicate fretted gilt hands. The small movement has a fixed pendulum, and verge escapement, wound through the dial. It is clear that the movement was originally designed as a striking movement. However, it is also clear that the movement and dial have always been together, and that these are also a perfect fit for the case. I am concluding that this is NOT a marriage, but rather a decision by the clockmaker to repurpose a movement for a brand new case and dial.

The aneroid barometer has a similar white enamel dial, marked Holosteric Barometer and the weather predictions in French script. The convex glass is fitted to a hinged bezel, screwed shut. This is fitted with a brass pointer hand. The barometer movement is a really nice quality, well-engineered mechanism.

The cases are in excellent condition, having been newly regilded.

Robert Edler is known to have had a clock shop and repair workshops at Hirschengraben No.. 5, Bernin 1884.
